    Folds a node's own machine back into one row: id=1 always holds the current MAC,
    so the cluster's copy of the same machine could keep the external_id on the old
    MAC and the node showed itself as a second, frozen card. Gated on a shared
    stable machine identity, never on a MAC alone.

    Also removes a misleading fast-forward: gaps above the FSM watermark are normal
    (raft keeps configuration and no-op entries out of the FSM), not evidence of a
    snapshot install.
